We had a very irritating theft from a garden this week – some time over the weekend – when a concrete garden ornament was stolen from a property in 11 Bethel Road.
Other than that, crime in Clovelly remains absent thanks in large part to our patrollers and residents being aware of unusual movement (people and vehicles) which are monitored.
One of the strange people is a man who was found walking down Clovelly Road late on Thursday night, claiming to be looking in bins and looking for a job.
Another reminder to look out for Brian Roman who has been in Clovelly but most recently seen in Fish Hoek – he steals from houses and also pretends to be a painter, taking deposits and doing no work (see attached sheet).
Not so quiet for toads
It seems a good time to remind you that the breeding season for the leopard toads is coming up and, with the warmer but wet weather, they should soon be seen crossing roads (probably from your gardens) to get to the river and ponds. Their breeding season is short – around five days – but you will see a lot of movement of the unsuspicious kind. If toads are on the road, take them across the road, in the same direction in which they are going. If you are keen to help with research on the endangered toad, contact Evanne on 021 782 6144 or 084 711 5413 and tell her what toads you have seen where and when; also about squashed toads (which they collect for DNA testing).
Neighbouring NW closes down
The Kalk Bay and St James NW, because of dwindling support, has ceased. They hope to rely on paid security. We will continue to try to build links with their former members who live adjacent to us (on Main Road around Wooleys Pool).
Crime info to and from SAPS
Since Capt Bester was transferred, getting crime info has been something of a mission and this week the mission failed somewhat despite several efforts. However I do have some vague information from the joint meeting held on Tuesdays, but not confirmed enough for my liking.
It would appear that burglaries are a bit down at about one per day and were in Silverglades, Carmichael Road (Fish Hoek west mountainside), somewhere in Noordhaven, in Kildare Road (Valyland), Nerina Crescent (Fish Hoek – bikes stolen from a garage), 9th Ave, Fish Hoek, and Brigantine Ave, Sun Valley. We also know of a break-in on Sunday morning on the beach side of Simonstown Road where a man got into a house as they came home, stealing a handbag. There would appear to be more skelms using the catwalk now that is repaired, as well as the railway line. Sun Valley NW also reported a young, black male with a chisel trying to chop off. garage locks in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
